Coal Marketing

New Hope produces thermal coal from its New Acland and New Oakleigh mines in southern Queensland and sells it to a wide variety of domestic and international customers.

Approximately 65 percent of New Hope's coal sales are exported to customers in a number of countries in the Asia-Pacific area, with the remaining 35 percent being sold domestically for electricity production and to a wide variety of general industry processors and manufacturers. Since entering the export market in 1980, New Hope has steadily grown its export business and currently exports more than 2 million tonnes of coal per annum.

New Hope exports Tivoli Brand coal, a thermal or steaming coal that has a high calorific value, producing excellent combustion and environmental performance for use in electricity generation. Coal mined and sold by New Hope is recognised by independent experts as being one of the lowest greenhouse gas producing coals in the world. The coal produces low nitrous oxides and carbon dioxide emissions and has low sulphur content making it one of Australia's cleanest burning coals. With higher organically bound hydrogen content, combustion of this coal produces lower rates of emissions of carbon dioxide per unit of electricity generated compared to other coals, an advantage in an increasingly environmentally sensitive world.

New Hope exports its coal through its 100 percent-owned export ship loading facility at Queensland Bulk Handling (QBH) at the Port of Brisbane. QBH has a reputation for timely loading of vessels without significant queuing, resulting in a quick dispatch and enabling the maximisation of vessel usage, as well as providing a reduction in shipping costs. World-class port security measures ensure sales to markets which are sensitive to commercial terrorism.

In 2006, New Hope Coal won the Premier of Queensland Export Minerals and Energy Award and was a national finalist in that category at the Australian Export Awards after having prominently featured in this awards category in recent years. The Australian Export Awards are co-presented by Austrade and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and are the culmination of judging in a truly national 3-tiered programme - Regional, State and National levels.

These awards are open to all exporters throughout Australia and are the highest recognition of export achievement. The awards also provide the opportunity to publicly recognise the talent and innovative spirit of Queensland's and Australia's leading exporters and publicly recognise enterprising excellence for the export of goods and services in the international market.
